Speaker Bio
Bruce Bassett has been a Full Professor of Applied Mathematics at the University of Cape Town since 2008 where his research explores both the theory and applications of AI and statistical models. Bruce was formerly head of Data Science at the Square Kilometer Array Africa (SARAO). After an undergraduate and MSc at UCT, Bruce went to Italy and then Oxford University for his PhD and postdoctoral years before returning to Cape Town in 2004 with a vision to help build science capacity in South Africa, first in cosmology and later in machine learning, statistics and AI. Bruce is the founder of the Data Science Intensive program.
